Keep crooks out of your garage and house By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department With warm weather and longer days comes yard work. Many residents keep their lawn equipment and other valuables inside their garage. It is not uncommon for residents to leave their garage door open while they are outside working. This may be convenient, but it is an open invitation to a burglar. Even if you are out front mowing, a criminal can quickly slip into your garage and enter your home. This can happen in a matter of five seconds or less. Here are a few tips you can incorporate into your daily routine to secure you garage and home. Secure your garage door Don’t leave your garage door opener in your car. If a thief breaks into your car and steals the remote, he has an easy way into your home. Secure the emergency release. If you are away from home for an extended period of time, use a zip-tie to secure the emergency release. Make sure the garage door is closed. When leaving your home, don’t just hit the remote and drive away. Stop to make sure the garage door closes and stays down. Check the garage door before going to bed. It is not uncommon for night shift officers to run across an open garage door. Close the garage door all the way down. You may be tempted on hot days to crack the garage door to let out the heat, but don’t do it. A criminal can easily slip under a partially open door. Secure your home Neighbors play a key role in preventing home thefts. Homeowners that have good relationships with their neighbors are less likely to be victimized. Neighbors looking out for each other and reporting suspicious activity will help reduce crime. Follow these tips to keep crooks out of your home. Padlock the side gate of your home. If a criminal can easily walk into your backyard, they’ll have a great place to hide while they attempt to break into your home. Lock all your doors. Whenever you leave home, make sure all the doors to your home are locked. This includes the side garage door and the door from your garage to your house. These are often overlooked by the homeowner. Close and lock your windows when you leave even if it is for a short time. With warmer weather you may be tempted to leave the windows open to let in fresh air. Open windows will also let in a thief. If you have an alarm system make sure to use it. Arm your system every time you leave. Post signs to let a potential thief know that you have a security system. You can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of home theft by following some simple rules every time you leave home. Don’t make your home an easy target for a criminal this season.

By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department It can happen to anyone. Dozens of children die in hot cars every year. According to National Safety Council (NSC), on average, 37 kids die in hot cars every year in the United States. Incidents peak between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when between two and three kids die each week. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, parents often are stressed. Often, tragedies occur when schedules and routines are broken. In April 2017, a 1-year-old boy died after being left in a pickup truck. At that time, the temperature in Vestavia, AL, was just 68 degrees. What many don't know is cars and trucks heat up rapidly even on milder days and no matter the time of year. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise by nearly 20 degrees in 10 minutes. Heatstroke occurs when a person's core body temperature rises to 104 degrees, according to research from Mayo Clinic. A temperature of 107 degrees could result in irreversible organ damage or even death. Young children are at risk because their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult's, according to a journal report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. What you can do. To prevent tragedies, Safe Kids Worldwide offers the following recommendations: Never leave your child alone in a car, not even for a minute Keep your car locked when you are not in it so kids don't gain access Create reminders by putting something in the back seat next to your child, such as a briefcase, purse, cell phone or your left shoe If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 Set a calendar reminder on your electronic device to make sure you dropped your child off at daycare; develop a plan so you will be alerted if your child is late or a no-show Technology can be part of the solution. The National Safety Council (NSC) backs efforts to use technology to prevent children from being forgotten in vehicles. Without offering an endorsement of any vehicle or product, NSC provides the following information to help parents and guardians protect their most precious cargo: Rear Seat Reminder: If a rear door is opened and closed within 10 minutes before the vehicle is started, or is opened and closed while the vehicle is running, five chimes will sound and a message will display on the instrument panel when the vehicle shuts off to remind the driver to check the rear seat. This technology is available on several GM vehicles. Car Seat Technology: This technology generates a series of tones activated through a "smart" chest clip and wireless receiver to remind the driver that a child is in the rear seat within two seconds of turning off the vehicle.

Upgrades to water and electric meters coming soon Like many utilities throughout the United States, Roseville will embark on a meter upgrade project to modernize the metering system later this year. This metering upgrade, which will take several years to implement citywide, includes industry-standard meters that wirelessly send readings and essential service information to both our water and electric utilities. As these meters come online, City employees will no longer need to visit homes or businesses to read meters physically and will be able to connect service and perform maintenance virtually. This will produce faster customer service resolution and smarter billing information for both the utilities and our customers. Learn more here. April 27, 2021 COVID vaccination appointments available There are still many COVID-19 vaccination appointments available for this Wednesday and Thursday at the county's clinic @the Grounds. Make an appointment now. Given the county's greatly expanded vaccine provider network, plateauing demand, and steadily decreased vaccine allotments from the state to Placer County Public Health, Placer County will begin to demobilize the mass vaccination clinic @the Grounds and redirect focus toward areas of the county with greater challenges to vaccination access. This means that after this week, they will no longer offer first dose appointments for the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines @the Grounds, and may offer limited J&J appointments in the coming weeks as they finish second doses. In the last four months, Placer County has built up its capacity to administer vaccines - including other mass vaccination clinics run by large healthcare systems, more than two dozen pharmacy outlets, and small clinics. As Placer County Public Health shifts their efforts, they will also redirect surplus doses to local providers who report having ample capacity for both more vaccine and more patients. Find appointments here or via the provider list here. Responsible Gun Ownership By Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many areas of our everyday activities, shopping habits, and sense of safety. According to a 2018 survey conducted by Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey, Americans own approximately 393 million guns, about 40% of all civilian-owned guns globally. There was a surge of gun purchases in 2020 with a study conducted by the University of California, Davis, showing a 64% increase in guns purchased across the country. The exact reasons for the increase are unknown, but many gun owners reported that they feel safer with a gun in their home. With this increase, it’s a great time to discuss responsible gun ownership and some basic gun safety tips. Gun owners should be educated on risks associated with guns and best practices for gun use and secure storage. Here are a few things to keep in mind. Education is key: Ensure everyone in your house who may operate the gun has been through a gun safety class and regularly practices. Gun safety is vital for all members of the household to follow. Be sure you know how your firearm operates: Read the manual on your firearm, especially if it’s new. Know how to safely open and close the action of the firearm. Know how to safely remove any ammunition from the firearm and its magazine. Best practices for gun use: always point in a safe direction – away from anyone; handle every gun as if it’s loaded; keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire; follow local gun safety laws; and practice gun training drills to improve gun handling. Proper and secure gun storage: Assume that children and teens can find and access the guns in the home. Store guns locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. Store guns in a gun vault or gun safe. Gun cabinets are intended to protect guns from damage or getting stolen and can limit an unauthorized person from accessing the gun(s). If you are concerned, need help, or want more information on responsible gun ownership, please contact the Roseville Police Department. In addition to the Roseville Police Department, there are several services accessible to Roseville residents: Placer County Family & Children’s Services: 916-872-6549 Placer County Crisis Resolution Center: 866-251-7584 The Lighthouse Counseling and Family Resource Center: 916-645-3300 Placer Network of Care: www.placer.networkofcare.org/mh

After receiving reports of the mysterious sound, the Placer County Agricultural Commissioner's Office investigated and confirmed that several farms northwest of Roseville have over the past few weeks been using a tool called a 'bird scare cannon' to keep geese from destroying more of this year's already heavily damaged crop. The cannon, or zon gun, is a small, propane-fired device that emits 'thunderclaps' to frighten off birds. It does not fire a projectile and is a standard agricultural practice and harmless to the animals. According to the Placer County Agricultural Commissioner's Office, zon gun use is allowable at night (when geese are feeding) under the county's right-to-farm ordinance but is seasonal. Video: What's Happening in Roseville for March We're back with our monthly video update to provide you information on the vaccine, how to maximize your COR fitness membership, and more Roseville news in our March update. Watch here! Stopping leaks in their tracks The average home wastes nearly 10,000 gallons of water per year from easy-to-fix household leaks; that’s equivalent to washing 300 loads of laundry (or enough to do laundry for 10 months)! During the month of March, we’re inviting everyone to take the 10-Minute Challenge to find and fix household leaks. Introducing incentives for all-electric new construction In Roseville, the benefits really add up with an all-electric home. As part of Roseville Electric Utility’s new Building Electrification Pilot Program, we offer incentives for homebuilders – up to $4,000 in rebates per qualifying lot. According to research, California’s buildings represent about 25% of the state’s total greenhouse gas emissions. One way to reduce GHGs is building electrification. This includes switching from fossil fuels to electricity use for space heating, water heating, induction cooking and clothes drying. Eligible homebuilders can receive incentives for all-electric single family and multi-family homes. For homebuilders in the Greater Sacramento Region, this also means saving time and money by expanding your reach throughout the region. Plug-in to the possibilities of an all-electric home. For more information on how to get started, visit roseville.ca.us/plugin. How Much is too Much Water for Your Yard? Join us for an upcoming webinar on principles of irrigation. Between 3,000 to 4,000 people are killed annually by distracted driving A ringing cell phone, fighting kids, or a spilling coffee cup--no one is immune from distractions. When you mix distractions and a vehicle traveling down the road, you get distracted driving. Distracted driving can occur when something diverts your attention from the task of safe and attentive driving. A study by the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates between 3,000 to 4,000 people are killed annually by distracted driving. According to the Center for Disease Control – Injury Center, there are three primary types of distractions: Mental or cognitive – when a driver’s mind is focused on something besides driving. These can include talking to another passenger, thinking about something that is upsetting, road rage, daydreaming, or being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Visual – when a driver looks at something other than what is ahead on the road. These can include looking at your phone, checking and adjusting your GPS, changing the radio station, adjusting your temperature controls, taking in the view, or doing your makeup. Manual – when one or both hands are taken off the wheel. These can include eating and drinking, adjusting your child's seatbelt, smoking, searching through your purse or wallet, or turning knobs in your car. There are things you can do to ensure you are driving as safely as possible. Here are some simple ways to minimize driving distractions: Keep your eyes on the road. Pull over to read directions. Put your phone in “Do Not Disturb” mode. Keep your phone out of reach. Make all car adjustments before driving. Don’t reach for items while driving. Avoid phone calls, even hands-free. Stay focused on the road. Keep your emotions in check. Distracted driving is a major cause of car-related injuries. Do your best to stay focused on the task of driving safely and you will be able to respond more quickly, be better positioned to think clearly when needing to respond, and likely spot a distraction before it becomes a problem.
